Professor Alastair Florence is Distinguished Professor in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Strathclyde and Director of CMAC providing leadership across the portfolio, engaging with our key stakeholders and driving the Centre’s vision to transform the development and manufacture of medicines. He leads the multidisciplinary academic team across the multi-institution research portfolio driving the ambitious manufacturing research, training, translation and facilities programmes. Working in close collaboration with our industry partners to understand existing or emerging challenges and develop effective solutions delivered by the CMAC programme.
Our ambitious Lab of the Future developments combine self-driving lab CMC DataFactories, predictive modelling and AI tools, CMC knowledge graph and ontologies to drive advanced process design and operations in our extensive test beds. In addition to our major Hub and industry research programmes, the world-class CMAC National Facility and Data Lab within the Technology and Innovation Centre (TIC) at Strathclyde offers access for academic and industrial users to state-of-the art processing, digital, analytical and characterisation facilities. In training and skills, the EPSRC CEDAR Centre for Doctoral Training will deliver 90 doctoral graduates expert in Cyberphysical systems, building on the 100+ CMAC doctoral graduates to date.
His research interests lie in the science and technology associated with continuous crystallisation, physical form control and advanced characterisation of pharmaceuticals and the development of predictive methods for experimental design, processing and control.
