Dyneval partnership brings advanced nanoparticle and crystallisation insights to CMAC

CMAC has announced that Dyneval, the Edinburgh-based particle characterisation company, has joined the Centre as a Tier Two member, bringing its innovative particle sizing platform with significant potential applications across pharmaceutical formulation and process research.

The partnership reflects a wider pattern taking shape across the pharmaceutical sector as technology providers and manufacturers increasingly engage in pre-competitive, collaborative research and work directly with researchers using their technology.

Working with CMAC gives Dyneval a direct route into applied pharmaceutical research where their novel characterisation platform can integrate into innovative pre-competitive research projects. The arrangement works both ways: Dyneval extends its reach into pharmaceutical development, and CMAC’s researchers have access to new capabilities, strengthening the collaborative ecosystem at the centre of CMAC’s model.

The Lumero benchtop instrument

Dyneval's flagship instrument, the Lumero® particle size analyser, introduces new capabilities and represents advancements in particle characterisation. Powered by Dyneval's proprietary VISTA (Video Intensity Spatio-Temporal Analysis) algorithm, the Lumero® delivers precise size distributions across a range spanning tens of nanometres to several microns. It can handle opaque samples with little or no dilution required and demands no prior knowledge of refractive index from the operator, lowering the barrier to high-quality, reproducible measurements.

Professor Yvonne Perrie, whose group specialises in lipid nanoparticle formulation, has already held early discussions with Dyneval about the potential of the Lumero® for nanoparticle characterisation and the value to CMAC research.

Professor Jan Sefcik, CMAC academic leader, whose group focuses on crystallisation and particle engineering, has already been working with the instrument to examine how it can support mechanistic understanding at the early stages of lipid nanoparticle formation.

We are particularly interested in using this technology for monitoring of particle formation under flow conditions, which would be especially relevant for self-assembly and precipitation processes including nanoparticle formation and antisolvent crystallisation.

Now installed within the CMAC facilities at the University of Strathclyde, the Lumero® fits squarely within CMAC's mission to develop and integrate innovative process analytical technologies into continuous pharmaceutical manufacturing. As a compact, benchtop system, it offers real practical advantages for both laboratory research and process development environments.

Dyneval, registered in Scotland and headquartered in Edinburgh, develops platform technologies for dynamic analysis at the nano- and microscale. Their membership strengthens CMAC's growing network of industry partners and adds a genuinely novel characterisation tool to the Centre's capabilities.

This is a clear example of what CMAC’s Tier Two offer delivers: a route for technology companies to embed their products within applied pharmaceutical research, and to test and validate their technology while accelerating innovative research programmes.
